OneLung

onelung.jpgKevin Tutt aka Onelung was a founding member of The Doubting Thomas’s
playing bass. They moved to Sydney and released an ep “It’s just a Dream” in 1987 before disbanding in 1988.

He then formed a new band Pink Frocks and moved back to Auckland in 1991.
Pink Frocks released two demo tapes. They changed their name to Cicada in 1992 with a new vocalist and unique sonic guitar sound. Cicada received serious airplay and produced numerous music videos. They toured New Zealand many times and played support for some well-known bands. Cicada released a full length CD “Soupsonic”, 5 track ep “Oscillator”, two 7-inch vinyl singles and a full length cassette. After Cicada disbanded in 1997, Kevin formed Onelung. Since then he has released three albums and an ep under the Onelung moniker and has made numerous appearances on various compilations.

Onelung - White

white.mp4

White features Matt Gibbons and Jesse Steel, two dancers heading out on the town to do some street performance with their trusty ghetto blaster. It is Christmas Eve 2006 in central Auckland and there are a lot of anxious shoppers running about scarcely paying attention to Matt and Jesse and their ‘Dance With Us’ sign.

After much hi-jinks along K Rd and Queen St they eventually find some new friends to dance with and the video ends with all the drinkers in the Occidental coming out and dancing on Vulcan Lane.

The video celebrates the special friendship between the two main characters and is an observation of how people react when asked to participate in something a little out of the ordinary. The fact that Jesse has Downs Syndrome is also challenging for passers by who may not be used to meeting people with this disability.

Both Matt and Jesse are experienced contemporary dancers and good friends and have danced together before in several productions with New Zealand’s acclaimed mixed ability dance troupe ‘Touch Compass’.

The video was directed by James Solomon (Solly Films) who has also recently made videos for Holllie Smith, Káren Hunter, Tim Guy and Batucada Sound Machine.

A mad sonic scientist played here by Onelung himself takes a little too much of a substance he has just brewed up in a test tube and goes on a pyschedelic bike ride through the city of Auckland.

Review

Behind the unappealing nom de disque is Auckland electronica musician Kevin Tutt whose previous album Nu Scientist was a real, if overlooked, gem.
Once again located somewhere between the harder end of Brian Eno ambient-pop and slightly funky electronica — with real instruments like cello and bass, and various vocalists alongside samples and electronics — this is music with heart, soul and smarts. It’s a wonder ad agencies and film producers aren’t sprinting to get Tutt onboard for soundtracks.
Here he effortlessly shuffles the deck again for an album which provokes and delights in equal measure.

Onelung - Nu Scientist

onelung_nu_scientist_1.jpgNu Scientist, by Onelung, delivers a tasty mash up of funky electronic grooves, lazy beats and experimental soundscapes.

On this, his fourth album, Onelung aka New Zealander Kevin Tutt serves up a mouth-watering smorgasbord of rhythms, dipping into a world of leftfield sampled delights. Tunes on offer here are all sample based, and are sourced from the internet and Kevin’s own recorded samples. There is an unnerving layering of textures and strange sonic sorcery that lends an air of unpredictability to the whole proceedings – which is to say, it never gets dull.

Reviews

“Nu Scientist rips along like a turbo-charged moon-hopper, bouncing and swaggering all over the place. It’s a refreshing blast of upbeat samples and riffs full of catchy hooks and funky licks. This is a swinging psychedelic affair, layered with a refreshingly eclectic blast of groovy samples from jazzy double bass to vintage sci-fi sound effects, and never rests on the clichéd smoothness of much house or downbeat filler.” Rip It Up

“Nu Scientist is a rich listen for those who don’t seek genre-specific sounds. Onelung is a one-man-band, making his pieces by delicately sampling his own and a vast history of recorded music. Very seldom does his music sound like a join-the-dots attempt at slotting things together: overall, it’s a rich, almost cinematic listening experience.” Metro

“Playing out like an imaginary movie with grooves, (Nu Scientist) cleverly samples and reconfigures jazz, rare groove, and a myriad of other well chosen samples, placing them into a lazy loping, slowly funkified context. If you like Amon Tobin, or some of the moodier releases of Ninja Tune, this is definitely worth a listen.” Real Groove

“A beautiful album, wistful electronica and sleepy beats that’s as good for bedtime as it is for the first thing in the morning.” Pulp

Onelung - Flashbacks

onelung-flashbacks.jpgOnelung’s third album is a heady brew of breakbeat/drum n’ bass and general mix mayhem.

Reviews

“This is a good as most of the international groove-based releases I’ve heard lately, and a good deal more left-field in terms of it’s odd sample choices.” Real Groove

Flashbacks is well named, as listening to it brings to the forefront memories long gone, called forth by the varied sounds on the tracks. Listen and absorb. The soundscapes are delicious and the rhythm, rhymes and beats divine.” varsity.co.nz
